Two events to offer rose care info

Rose lovers, rejoice!

Then prepare to choose.

Two events sure to appeal to rose lovers are scheduled for the same time Saturday, Feb. 28

American Rose Society Consulting Rosarian Robert Powell will offer information on growing roses organically at 10 a.m. at Akin’s Nursery, 5801 E. Kings Highway, Shreveport.

Powell prefers organic gardening methods and products for his yard full of roses and other plants. He’ll share what works for him in his South Shreveport garden and answer your questions.

Admission is free.

The Gardens of the American Rose Center, located at 8877 Jefferson Paige, Road, Shreveport, will hold its first Green Thumb seminar of the year from 9 a.m. to noon.

Featured speakers are LSU AgCenter horticulturist Allen Owings and Stephen Scanniello, curator of the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden at the New York Botanical Garden and president of the Heritage Rose Foundation.

The program will cover such topics as the types of roses available for landscape use along with rose trends from the past and what may be available from the rose breeders in the future, old garden and Earth Kind favorites, the new disease-resistant floribunda and hybrid tea roses from Kordes, five Easy Tea hybrid tea roses, cultural practices and more. Scanniello will also lead a hands-on pruning demonstration and discussion in the Heritage Rose Garden.

Why do they have to be at the same time?
