March blooms with garden events

March kicks Louisiana’s gardening season into high gear.

But, if you can, make time to squeeze in some garden talks. We can always learn something new.

Here’s what’s coming up:

  • Jonquil Jubilee: Gibsland’s Jonquil Jubilee garden tour and festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 1. Speakers include Jack Dillard, Gladden Willis and Marjorie Thomas. Admission: free, festival; self-guided tour, $10. Info: 318-548-2693.
  • Southern Lawn Care: LSU AgCenter turf grass specialist Ronald Strahan will lead a class on lawn care at 10 a.m. March 1 at Akin’s Nursery, 5901 E. Kings Highway, Shreveport. Topics will include fertilization, disease and pest control. Door prizes will be given away. Admission: free, but seating is limited so advance registration is recommended. Info: 318-868-2701.

    “Bouquets — A Symposium on Food, Floral and Garden Design for the Southern Lifestyle”: The event, featuring James Farmer and sponsored by the Shreveport Garden Study Club, will be presented at 10:30 a.m. March 4 at East Ridge Country Club, 1000 Stewart Drive, Shreveport. Farmer, of Kathleen, Ga., is author of the Wall Street Journal best-selling book, “A Time To Plant” (2011), “Sip & Savor” (2012), “Porch Living” (2012), “Wreaths For All Seasons” (2012), and “A Time to Cook” (2013). A tea will follow the presentation.   • Herb Gardening: Paula Fields, of Old Columbus Herb Farm, will share information on creating and maintaining an herb garden at 10 a.m. March 8 at Akin’s Nursery, 5901 E. Kings Highway, Shreveport.   • Container Gardening and Raised Beds: LSU AgCenter assistant extension agent Grace Peterson will lead a session on container gardening and raised beds at 9:30 a.m. March 8 at Valencia Park Community Center, 1800 Viking Drive, Shreveport. The event is part of the We Grow Together garden initiative. Admission: free. Registration or info: 318-840-1565.
  • Square Foot Gardening: Square foot gardening expert Dwain Spillman will talk about square foot gardening techniques and demonstrate simple irrigation techniques at 10 a.m. March 8 at Louisiana Nursery, 12290 Mansfield Road, Keithville. Refreshments will be served and door prizes given away.   • Dirt Friends Festival: The Union County, Ark., Master Gardeners will present their Dirt Friends Festival  from 9:30 a.m.-noon March 8 in the College Avenue Church of Christ Family Life Center, 1817 N. College Ave., El Dorado, Ark. Speakers are Mike Shoup, of the Antique Rose Emporium, Brenham, Texas; and Janet Carson, a University of Arkansas horticulture specialist. Admission: $10.
  • Spring Garden Day: The Tangipahoa Parish Master Gardeners Spring Garden Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 8 at the Hammond Research Station, 21549 Old Covington Highway, Hammond. Included will be plant sales, plant swap, seminars, children’s activities, commercial and educational exhibits, commercial vendors, gardening advice, plant information and concessions.   • Louisiana Nursery Festival: The 29th annual Louisiana Nursery Festival will be held March 14-16 in Forest Hill. Vendors will offer plants, garden items, arts and crafts. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 14-15 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 16. Admission: free. Info: www.louisiananurseryfestival.com.
  • NorthShore Garden Show: LSU AgCenter and the St. Tammany Parish Master Gardeners will hold the garden show on March 14-15 at the St. Tammany Fairgrounds, Covington. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 14 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 15. It will feature plant sales, garden items and educational talks. Admission: $5, adults. Info: 985-875-2635.
  • 10 Plants Every Southern Garden Should Have: Speaker is Kathie Rowell, creator of www.louisianablooms.com and former garden columnist at The Times in Shreveport, at 10 a.m. March 15 at Akin’s Nursery, 5901 E.   • louisiana_super_plantsLouisiana Super Plants: Dr. Allen Owings, of LSU AgCenter, will talk about the Louisiana Super Plant program at 10 a.m. March 25 at Louisiana State Exhibit Museum, 3015 Greenwood Road, Shreveport. Louisiana Super Plants have been tested and found to perform well in the state. The event is the first in the 2014 series of horticulture talks sponsored by the Northwest Louisiana Master Gardeners.   • Audubon Pilgrimage: The 43rd annual Audubon Pilgrimage will be held March 21-23 in St. Francisville. The event includes tours of historic homes and gardens, antique show and sale, and more. Multiple tours/packages are available. Info: www.audubonpilgrimage.
  • Southwest Louisiana Garden Festival: The festival, sponsored by the Southwest Louisiana Master Gardeners will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 21-22 in Burton Coliseum, 7001 Gulf Highway and Gauthier Road, Lake Charles.   • Bloomin’ on the Bricks: Natchitoches 14th annual spring garden festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 22 on the downtown riverbank.
