March garden events spell spring

Who’s happy to see February go and March arrive? Even if it comes in like a lion, it has to be better than the bone-chilling cold we’ve had recently.

So, to get everybody fired up about a new gardening season, check, out these March events:

Growing Citrus in Northwest Louisiana

Retired LSU AgCenter horticulturist Denyse Cummins will offer information on growing citrus in Northwest Louisiana at 10 a.m. March 7 at Akin’s Nursery, 5901 E. Kings Highway, Shreveport. Admission: free, but seating is limited so registration is suggested. Info: 318-868-2701.

Square Foot Gardening and Gardening by the Moon

Dwain Spillman will talk about square foot gardening and gardening by the moon at 10 a.m. March 7 at Louisiana Nursery, 12290 Mansfield Road, Shreveport. Admission: free. Info: 318-925-0971.

Container Gardening and Raised Beds

The Red River Coalition of Community Gardeners will offer a class on container gardening and raised beds at 9:30 a.m. March 14 at the Valencia Park Community Garden, 1800 Viking Drive, Shreveport. Admission: free. Info: 318-840-1565 or mldumars@yahoo.com.

Dirt Friends Festival

The Union County, Ark., Master Gardeners Dirt Fiends Festival will be held March 14 at West Side Baptist Church’s Wilson Hall, 2400 W. Hillsboro, El Dorado, Ark. Speakers are Janet Carson, University of Arkansas horticultural specialist, “Edible Gardening”; and Bob Byers, landscape architect with Garvan Woodland Gardens in Hot Springs, “Designing a Perennial Border/Natives.”  Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with the program starting at 9.  The festival will also feature vendors, door prizes and refreshments.  Admission: $10.

Baton Rouge Spring Garden Show

The 13th annual Baton Rouge Spring Garden Show is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 14-15 at the John M. Parker Coliseum on Highland Road, Baton Rouge. The event includes local nurseries and other vendors selling plants and other garden wares, including tools, pots, ornaments and landscaping materials. Info: 225-578-2222.

Greens on the Red

The second Greens on the Red celebration will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. March 15 at the Highland Community Garden, 520 Herndon St., Shreveport. The event, sponsored by We Grow Together! And LUS AgCenter, will feature tastings and education. Admission: free. Info: 318-741-7430 Ext. 1503.

Audubon Pilgrimage

The 44th annual Audubon Pilgrimage will be held March 20-22 in St. Francisville and will featured both plantation tours and garden tours. Admission: $35. Info: www.aububonpilgrimage.info.

Perennials for Shreveport/Bossier City

Akin’s Nursery staffer Julie Rogers, who has a degree in plant sciences, will offer suggestions on perennials for our area at 10 a.m. March 21 at Akin’s, 5901 E. Kings Highway, Shreveport. Admission: free, but seating is limited so advance registration is suggested. Info: 318-868-2701.

The Love of Herbs

Bloomin’ on the Bricks

The spring garden festival from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 21 will feature plants, lawn and garden art and landscape materials, as well as musical entertainment, food and children’s activities, on Natchitoches’ downtown riverbank. Secret Gardens Tour of New Orleans

The Secret Gardens Tour of New Orleans will be held March 21. Private tours led by landscape and design experts will begin every half hour from 8:30 a.m. to noon; self-guided are from noon to 5:30 p.m. Admission: $60, private tour; $30, self-guided tour. Info: www.secretgardenstour.org.

Southwest Louisiana Garden Conference and Expo

The 16th annual Southwest Louisiana Garden Conference and Expo will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 27-28 in Burton Coliseum, 7001 Gulf Highway and Gauthier Road, Lafayette. It will include garden seminars, plant sale and plant health clinic. Admission: $3, adults; free, 12 and under. Info: www.gardenfest.org.

Herb Sale

The Ark-La-Tex Herb Society plant sale will be held from 8 a.m. to noon March 28 at the Highland Center, 520 Olive St., Shreveport. Admission: free.

Easter Pot/Hanging Basket Workshop

Akin’s Nursery co-owner Sheila Womack will lead a hands-on workshop to create an Easter pot or hanging basket at 10 a.m. March 28 at the nursery, 5901 E. Kings Highway, Shreveport. Vegetable Gardening in Louisiana
