At 22 acres and complete with lake and A. Hays Town-designed home, the garden of Steve and Renee Schoonover is a classic Southern landscape.

Azaleas, dogwoods, cypress trees, crape myrtles, ginger lilies, roses, Louisiana irises, Confederate jasmine, camellias and hydrangeas are among the iconic Southern plants to be found on the estate, which includes two pools, a summer house, large fountain and extensive outdoor patios and entertaining spaces.

You can see for yourself on May 3-4 when the garden is one of six featured on Le Tour des Jardins, the annual garden tour sponsored by the Northwest Louisiana Master Gardeners.

While much of the landscaping was in place when the Schoonovers bought the property a few years ago, Renee has worked with Fleming Landscape and Irrigation to bring her vision for it to life. That’s included adding dogwoods, Japanese maples and weeping willows.

“I love dogwoods and I’m going to plant more,” she said. “Every year I’m going to plant 10.”

Other projects include adding a children’s playground and landscaping a ditch that runs between their property and the neighbors. Renee is also looking for old garden accents to complement the feel of the garden.
