Daylily Sale

The Ark-La-Tex Daylily Club will host their annual daylily sale from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. June 1 and 8 at the Benton Farmers Market, 495 Simpson Street, Benton. Both potted and bare root daylilies, locally grown by club members, will be for sale. Admission: free.

The Art of Bonsai

Local bonsai expert Bob Specien will give a talk on the centuries-old practice at 10 a.m. June 7 at Akin’s Nursery, 5901 E. Kings Highway, Shreveport.  Admission: free, but seating is limited so advance registration is requested. Info: 318-868-2701.

Fairy Gardening Workshop

fairy handsAkin’s Nursery, 5901 E. Kings Highway, Shreveport, will hold a fairy gardening class led by nursery co-owner Sheila Womack at 10 a.m. June 14. Participants will receive pots, potting soil, plants, fairy gardening accessories and guidance. Cost: $25; reservations required. Info: 318-868-2701.

ABCs of Sustainable Landscaping

Melea Martin, coordinator for the Northwest Louisiana Master Gardener Association and the Northwest Regional Master Gardener Coordinator, will be the guest speaker at the Master Gardener Horticulture Lecture to be held at 10 a.m. June 18 at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum, 3015 Greenwood Road, Shreveport. Bugs, Bugs, Bugs! The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

The June 21 Green Thumb Seminar at the Gardens of the American Rose Center includes several “buggy” talks and activities. The schedule:

  • 9 a.m.: Welcome.
  • 9:15-10:15 a.m.:  Louisiana Master Gardener Lou Osburn’s talk — “A Study of Organic Insect Pest Control” – will includie a demonstration of easily obtained organic products for the control of unwanted insect pests, and illustrations of recognizable beneficial insects, as well as advice on how to attract and keep those useful insects in your garden.
  • 10:15-10:30:  Break.
  • 10:30-11:  Speaker Dale Stetson, bug hotel structures builder, will demonstrate a DIY bug hotel for your garden.
  • 11-noon: Build-your-own-bug-hotel workshop: Stetsonwill bring empty houses for you to fill. All supplies included. There will small and medium hotels for sale.  Ready-made bug hotels will be available for purchase.

Activities will take place in Klima Hall, Gardens of the American Rose Center, 8877 Jefferson Paige Road, Shreveport. Admission: free, but advance registration is requested. Info: 318-938-5402.
